Light Studies

Six ways the sun was kept

Shown one wall at a time, in the dark, because that is how these pictures were made: one light, held as long as it lasted. Scroll slowly. Each wall is a single exposure.

How to look at light

Six exposures

Each wall in this show holds one light — a morning, an hour later, a nocturne, a blaze. Painters cannot stop the sun; they can only keep it.

  • Walk slowly.
  • Let each wall settle before the next.
  • Notice what the hour does to the color of shadow.

The pictures argue with each other so you do not have to take any one of them at its word.
